Title - Tribal fact Book

Title: Tribal Fact Book
Narrative: Students will work in cooperative groups, choose a Native American tribe and make a historical fact book outlining Native American history. The students will need to include information on how the tribe was affected by the aggression of white settlers. This activity will take 3 weeks.
Objectives: Students will research a Native American tribe and construct a tribal fact book.
Students will work together in groups and present the completed book to the class.
Materials: Regions of North America transparency
Textbook
Examples of historical fact books
Construction paper
Crayons/markers/colored pencils
Glue/tape
Scissors
Hole puncher
String/yarn
Procedure:
1. The teacher will have the students take turns reading the textbook section on Native American tribes.
2. The teacher will show the students the North American Regions transparency and discuss the tribes that lived in each of these regions.
3. The teacher will allow the students to divide into five groups, choose one of the regions, and choose a tribe that belongs to that region. Examples of historical fact books will be available for the students to view.
4. The teacher will instruct the students to include questions such as:
-- How did federal policies affect this tribe and what changes did it bring?
-- Where does the tribe exist today?
5. There will be one class session put aside for library research and the teacher will assist students on where to find information on their tribe. The teacher will encourage students to use alternative resources such as cultural centers or museums.
6. The teacher will assist students in the creation of their fact books.
Assessment: Students will be assessed by the following rubric with at least five check marks in the evident column.
