Time Required – 40 min.

This lesson plan is specifically for the state of Alabama, but can be adapted

I.   Concepts:

To describe the characteristics of a European explorer in a poem.

II.  Behavioral Objectives

Given a European explorer, the student will be able to write a poem about the explorer.

III.  Alabama Course of Study

#12 – Describe European exploration and settlement in Alabama.

IV.  Materials

A hat for drawing names, European explorer names on small pieces of paper to draw for, construction paper, notebook paper, pencils, markers, decorating box (glue, glitter, stickers, tissue paper, etc.), and their Alabama history book.

V.  Teaching/Learning Procedures

    A.  Motivation

This is a craft project that the students may decorate, write and display outside of the classroom after they complete them. The student will also be allowed to share their poem to the rest of the class.

    B.  Instructional Procedures

      1. The teacher will give a description of the activity, tell how to do the activity, and model her poem.

      2. The students will draw an explorer’s name out of a hat.

      3. Students will go to their desk, take out their notebook paper and Alabama history book and find their selected explorer in Chapter 4. They will then begin to write a poem that fits the format that the teacher’s poem modeled. This first draft will be done on notebook paper.

      4. The student will then transfer their final poem onto construction paper and decorate the poem.

    C.  Closure

Students will share their poem with the other students.

VI.  Evaluation

    Teacher observation and student participation
