Learning Objective(s):
The student will be able to:
- choose who they want to be when they grow up (future occupation)
- describe how they will help the community
- draw a picture illustrating who they want to be and how they will help the community
- present their picture and tell the class how they will help the community
List of Materials Needed:
- Construction Paper
- Pencil
- Markers/Crayons
Pre-Activity Preparation:
Prepare an example of what is expected.
Transition:
Students will work individually at their desk, then present to the whole class. Volunteers will go first, then teacher picks out which student goes next.
Establishing Set/Motivation/Introduction:
Show example and explain it to the students
Learning Experiences/Presentation/Procedure:
- Remind students about what they have been learning in social studies.
- Ask, "Who are some community helpers?"
- Tell students that they will be doing a community helper activity.
- Tell students they will draw someone they want to be when they are an adult.
- Then them to write how they will help the community.
- Show your example and explain it.
- Student should have their own supplies except for the construction paper, which teacher will hand out. If not, pick one person from each table to get the supplies for their table to share (1 box of markers and 1 box of crayons).
- Once they get to the tables, tell them they have thirty minutes to draw, color, write, and then present their work.
- After thirty minutes, tell students to stop what they are doing and put everything where it needs to go and be ready to present.
- Presentation:
- Ask for any volunteers.
- If there are any, let them go one-by-one, then pick on students who have not gone.
- Everyone will present.
- Have them put their name on their paper and turn it in.
Closure:
Check if students understood what was expected by their presentation.
- Did student follow directions?
- Did they choose who they wanted to be?
- Did they tell how they will help the community?
