Title - Aborigines
By - Sinead Walsh
Primary Subject - Social Studies
Grade Level - 3

Duration: 45 minutes

Objectives: to enable the child to
    1) Use information to find out about different aspects of Aboriginal life
    2) Discuss what they have found out
Content:
The children in groups will be given chart paper and markers. In each group they will be focusing on a different topic. I did this with my class of thirty and split them into groups of five. The topics to look at were music, art, religion, tribes and homelands, food and cooking and hunting and gathering.

The groups are asked to compile the most important information on a chart to present to the rest of the class. My class used their books and printouts from the web as well as other resources that I had - didgeridoo etc.

I found using the chart useful for motivation and because weaker students did not to have to write. Those who were talented artistically could contribute in that way.

Hold a share session at the end where each group teaches from their chart and if the teacher questions intelligently, this is where some great learning can occur for the whole class.

As an extension into drama and culture, one could do a lesson about when the white people first came to Australia or the infringement of the Aborigines rights in Australia. For music, my class of all boys loved the didgeridoo music.
