Title - Train Stops
By - Serena Fleming
Primary Subject - Health / Physical Education
Grade Level - 2-5
Name of Activity: Train Stops

Purpose of this activity: To warm-up students before class, or cumulative activity for the end of class period. Help students to review lesson skills, tagging, chasing, dodging, and fleeing. Emphasize giving their best effort. Keep their eyes on target. Maintain control of tags. Be aware of surrounding space.

Prerequisites: Students have knowledge of safe tagging. Students should use different locomotor movements and different speeds. Dodging strategies will also be helpful. (Changing directions, speeds, quick turns)

Materials Needed: cones, soft paddles, open space

Description of Idea: The students will be partnered up, staying together-holding hands or linking arms. The type of train will determine their route and the number of partners (max. 3). Pictures and descriptions suggested. The students are a train. Each train wants to make it through the route without any stops. There will be several train conductors, linked in pairs together trying to tag/pit stop the train. They may use a small handled implement to tag. Once the train is stopped, it must spin two complete circles and continue the route.

Variations: Younger students (K-1) may also participate in this activity once an understanding of dodging, chasing, and fleeing is grasped. The instructor may start and stop the activity with music to maintain attention.

Assessing Ideas: The skills of dodging, chasing, and fleeing may be assess with the following:
Dodging: speed changes, different pathways used, changing levels to avoid being tagged
Chasing: speed changes, quick movements/turns, eye hand coordination/control, eyes on target
Fleeing: speed changes, quick fakes, quick movements/turns
Adaptations for Students with Disabilities: Create a smaller playing area, wheel chair students may use a longer implement (soft noodle) to tag students, or use less train engineers when a disabled student is a train. Also disabled student can be invincible and only their partner can be tagged.
