Decay? No Way! Webquest
Lesson Description:
This is an independent student activity focusing on exploring the Colgate Kids World website to learn more about dental health. Students will link to the website and find the answers to the questions listed on the Decay? No Way! Webquest worksheet by engaging in the games and activities listed. Students will fill in the correct answer to each of the questions. After they have recorded all the answers they can print out a copy of the Brush with the Animals game and color it for additional homework and print a copy of the brushing chart to reinforce healthy brushing habits at home.

- Connection to the internet
- Each student(s) will have a copy of the worksheet to record answers; Educators should print out copies of the worksheet file for each student.
- Educators should also direct students on how they can print out a copy of the Brush with the Animals game to color for additional homework if they choose and the brushing chart to take home and post to reinforce brushing habits.
- Available printer and paper to print out student worksheets
Management:
- For this independent student activity, students will be working as individuals or in small groups in a computer lab or at computer stations available in classrooms. Computer linkages to the Internet are necessary in order to visit websites for needed games and activities.
- The educator will need to reserve computer lab time for this activity. Please be aware that the lesson activity after this one may also require the use of this same equipment. If needed, please adjust equipment reservation time accordingly.

- Students will be able to tell why it is so important to take care of permanent teeth.
- Students will be able to explain what plaque is.
- Students will be able to explain how cavities form.
- Students will be able to demonstrate the proper way to brush teeth.
- Students will be able to explain the importance of brushing teeth.
- Students will be able to identify appropriate times to brush teeth.
- Students will be able to identify sugary, sticky foods to avoid.
- Students will be able to identify cleansing foods.
Anticipatory Set:
If this activity is done as part of the kit sequence of activities, begin by listing what class topics have been discussed thus far (potentially, curriculum terms, Overhead Tooth Model, Save Our Tooth, etc.). Review with students what the Decay? No Way! Webquest activity will cover and entail.
Relate student experiences to the objectives of the lesson by asking the following kinds of questions:
- Why is it important for you to take care of your teeth?
- Why do you think that brushing is important?
- What are some sugary, sticky foods that you try to avoid?
- What are some cleansing foods that you like to use to keep your teeth clean?
- When do you brush your teeth?
Teaching - Input:
Lesson Terms – Grade 1 & 2:
- Calcium is a mineral found in foods such as milk and cheeses that help make bones and teeth strong.
- A cavity is a small hole in a tooth.
- Decay is to slowly rot.
- A dentist is a doctor who takes care of people’s teeth.
- Plaque is a sticky coating on teeth from sugars and bits of food.
- Vitamin C is a vitamin that helps you to have health gums and blood vessels; it helps your bones to stay strong.
Lesson Terms – Grade 3:

- Students will see the Decay? No Way! Webquest worksheet on their screen. Educators should print out copies of the worksheet for each student. Educators will direct students to link to the webpage given on the worksheet and answer the four questions listed by engaging in the games and activities listed on the Colgate Kids World website.
- As answers are gathered from the websites, students will write the answer to the question in the space provided on the worksheet.
- After students find the answers, they should direct their attention to the Brush with the Animals game and print out the page to color it if they choose.
Potential questions to pose to check understanding:
- What are some examples of healthy cleansing snacks?
- How many times a day should you brush your teeth?
- How can you keep your smile bright and healthy?
- Why is it important to brush and floss?
Closure:
- When complete, students should hand in the sheet for the educator for correction or as homework.
- Students should print copies of the Brush With the Animals page to color.
- Students should print copies of the brushing chart to use at home as a reminder to brush twice daily.
- Review what was covered in this lesson today about the ways to keep our teeth and gums healthy for a lifetime.

- The proper way to brush the teeth is to remove the plaque near the gum line by sweeping it away from the gums. It can also be called the “Wiggle, Giggle, Swoosh” method.

- It is important to brush your teeth in order to avoid cavities, tooth decay, and plaque build-up. This will allow you to eat, talk, and smile with no problems.

- Will cavities form if you do not brush your teeth?
- What will happen if there is a build up of plaque and acid on your teeth?
- It is important to brush our teeth three times a day. You should brush after breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

- If you do not have a toothbrush, is there anything else that you can do to clean your teeth after a meal?
- Should you brush our teeth before or after you eat?
- Some sugary, sticky foods that should be avoided include candy, cookies, and cake.
- What kinds of foods should be avoided in order to keep your teeth healthy?
- Give some examples of these kinds of foods.
- What will happen if you eat too many of these kinds of foods?
- What kind of snacks could we eat instead of these sugary, sticky foods?
- If we do decide to eat things like candy, cookies, and cake, is there anything that we can do to make sure that they don’t hurt our teeth?
- Any hard and crunchy fruits or vegetables like apples, carrots, celery, or peanuts are considered cleansing foods because they help to remove plaque from the teeth when you are chewing them.
