Lesson Title:
The Case of the Evil Tower of Tar:  The Accumulation of Tar in the Lungs

Lesson Description:
This educator-led lesson focuses on the accumulation of tar in the lungs from smoking.   “Sherlock” appears on the screen introducing the students to “The Case of the Evil Tower of Tar.”  Sherlock is in the lab of his enemy “Cig Shady Chef” and he explains that tar caused by smoking builds up in the lungs over time.  A healthy set of lungs appear along with 12 bundles of cigarettes.  Sherlock explains to the student’s that each bundle contains 900 cigarettes, a month’s worth, if you smoked a pack and a half a day.  The students are then directed by Sherlock to “drag” and “drop” the bundles into Cig Shady Chef’s smoking machine.  The students get to see how much tar builds up in the lungs after one year.  A cost of smoking worksheet is provided in addition to this activity.

  2. Computer, mouse and large screen LCD/digital projector with link to the internet
  3. Projector screen for front of classroom
  4. Each student (s) will need a copy of the worksheet to complete at the end of the activity.  Educators should print out copies of the worksheet file for each student.
  5. Available printer and paper to print out student worksheets

Management:

  • For this educator-led activity, students will be working in one large group or in two to three smaller groups to watch video segments on the projection screen in the front of the classroom.
  • The educator will need to reserve and/or acquire a lap top computer, computer-based LCD/digital projector and projection screen in advance of this activity.  Please be aware some lesson activities before and following this one also require use of this same equipment.  If needed, please adjust equipment reservation time accordingly.
  • The educator may ask for a student volunteer (s) to come to the front of the class and “click” and “drag” the bundles of cigarettes over to the smoking machine on behalf of the whole student group as a variation.
  • As a variation, this lesson may be completed in the computer lab/back of classroom computers as individuals or small groups if smoking and its harmful effects have been reviewed prior to this activity.

Lesson Procedures:

Lesson Objectives/Links to Curriculum Standards:

  1. Students will be able to explain how tobacco use affects the respiratory system

PA State Standards:  10.1.6 E; 2.2.5 A
http://www.pde.state.pa.us/stateboard_ed/lib/stateboard_ed/SandyHealth.pdf
National Standards:  1, 2, 6
http://www.mcrel.org/compendium/Standard.asp?SubjectID=17

Anticipatory Set:
If this activity is done as part of the kit sequence of health education activities available on LearntobeHealthy.org begin by listing what class topics have been discussed thus far (potentially, curriculum terms, smoking, inhalants, respiratory system, etc.)  Review with students what The Case of the Evil Tower of Tar Activity and Cost of Smoking Worksheet will entail.

Relate student experiences to the objectives of the lesson plan by asking the following kinds of questions:

  1. What is used to pave roads?
  2. Did you know that tar is used in cigarettes?
  3. Does tar belong inside your bodies?
  4. They add tar to cigarettes to give them taste/flavor, how can tar hurt your lungs?
  5. Did you know that there are over 4,000 chemicals in tobacco/cigarettes?
  6. How many of you know someone who smokes?  Do you think it would be easy for that person to quit smoking?  Why?
  7. Did you know that nicotine in tobacco is what causes addiction?

Teaching-Input:
Lesson Terms:

  1. Addiction is a physical and/or mental need for a drug.
  2. Alveoli are tiny air sacs on the tips of the smallest branches of the lungs.
  3. A carcinogen is a substance that can cause cancer.
  4. Nicotine is a drug found in tobacco and cigarettes that speeds up the work of the body.
  5. The respiratory system is the system that brings oxygen into the body and removes carbon dioxide out of the body.
  6. Second hand smoke is the smoke you breathe in from another person’s cigarette.
  7. Tobacco is the material that is in cigarettes, cigars, and chewing tobacco.

Teaching-Modeling/Understanding/Guided Practice:

  • Students will gather as one large group to watch the activity as it is projected onto the large screen in the classroom.  Once the activity is launched from LearntobeHealthy.org, Sherlock appears on the screen and introduces the students to “The Case of the Evil Tower of Tar”.
  • Sherlock is in the lab of his enemy “Cig Shady Chef” and he explains that the tar caused by smoking builds up in the lungs over time.  A healthy set of lungs appear along with 12 bundles of cigarettes.  Sherlock explains to the students that each bundle contains 900 cigarettes, a month’s worth, if you smoked a pack and a half a day.
  • The students are then directed by Sherlock to “drag” and “drop” the bundles into Cig Shady Chef’s smoking machine (need to start with January and go in order).  After each bundle, the “fresh, pink” lungs begin to get darker with tar.  The students will get to see how much tar builds up in the lungs after just one year.
  • Educator should print out the “Cost of Smoking” Worksheet for each student.  The students can sit at their desk and calculate the math problems.  Worksheets can be used for a large group activity or as homework.

Potential questions to pose to check understanding:

How can smoking affect your ability to breathe?
What chemical in tobacco builds up on the lungs after time?
What is tar usually used for?
How many cigarettes would someone smoke in a month if they smoked a pack and a half a  day (1 pack=20 cigarettes)?
Why do they add tar to cigarettes? (Answer: flavor/taste)
What might happen to your body if you smoked a lot of cigarettes for 10, 20, 30 years?

Guided Practice:

  • Each bundle (month) needs to be taken in order starting with January. Drag and drop each bundle into the smoking machine.  Once a bundle is dropped into the smoking machine, the pink lungs will slowly but surely begin to turn black with tar.
  • Students will see over time, the tar from the cigarettes accumulates in the lungs.  The tar will turn    hard and crusty and coats the lungs which will make it harder to breathe.

Closure:

  • When complete, the lungs will be covered in tar.  The educator can pass out the Cost of Smoking Worksheet to each student.  Students can work alone or in small groups to calculate the math problems.  As a variation, the Worksheet could be used as homework or extra credit.
  • Review what was covered in the lesson today about tar accumulation in the lungs and the cost of smoking.  Smoking not only affects your body but your wallet too!!
  • Students can log on to LearntobeHealthy.org for further health education activities and games.

Lesson Learning Points/Guiding Questions:

  1. There are over 4,000 chemicals in tobacco/cigarettes.  One of the chemicals is tar.  Over time, tar accumulates on the lungs which makes breathing more difficult.
    • What is tar usually used for?
    • Why do they add tar to cigarettes?
    • How does the tar from cigarettes affect your ability to breathe?
    • Do you know any other chemicals that are in tobacco/cigarettes?
  2. Smoking affects your not only your body but your wallet too.  Smoking is an expensive habit.
    • How much does a pack of cigarettes cost?
    • A pack a day habit over one year is well over $1,000; can you name some things you could buy with $1,000?
    • How much would it cost you to smoke per week, month, or year?

Independent Practice/Lesson Assessment:

  • Students will be able to explain what happens when tar from smoking enters the body.
  • Students will be able to explain what happens when tar accumulates over time.
  • Students will correctly identify what it costs to smoke per week, month, and year.
