Title – Health Careers

Grade Level – 9-12

Rationale:

Students have been learning about the respiratory, cardiovascular, and skeletal systems and it is essential to inform them about the possible careers that are available for them.

Prior Knowledge of Students:

Students should have a background in the respiratory, cardiovascular and skeletal systems.

New Jersey Standard:

2.2.12 F. Health Services and Careers:
1. Access health and fitness services, programs, and resources and evaluate them for cost, availability,
   accessibility, benefits, and accreditation.
2. Analyze the preparation, licensing, and responsibilities of wellness and fitness professionals.

Performance Objectives:

1. Cognitive: At the end of the lesson on careers, students should know the different health careers that are available to them. They will be assessed based on a series of questions at the end of the period.
2. Social: At the end of the lesson on health careers, students should be on task 80% of the time at any given minute interval. The teacher will evaluate the on-task behavior by observing for two one-minute intervals.

Procedure:

1. Introduction
   1. Salaries and Professions
      1. Attached is a table of professions and the salaries (See SALARIES below). They will be cut-out, mixed up and handed out to the students
      2. The students will then pair the salary with the profession they believe correlates
      3. They will then record it on the board so we can discuss
      4. Teacher will then write the correct order on the board
2. Content:
   1. Teacher will go over the description, workplace, and amount of education necessary for each profession
   2. Teacher will go one by one as he/she gives the correct answers to the salaries
   3. Content (See HEALTH CAREERS below)

Assessment:

1. Will be used as a final activity as well (See NAME THAT PROFESSION below)
   
2. Teacher evaluation of on task time.

Closure:

1. Sum up lesson – ask for questions regarding careers.
2. Review the amount of education and the importance.

RADIOLOGIST

• Description – A Radiologist is a medical specialist directing medical imaging technologies to diagnose and treat diseases and disorders. (MRI, CT, Ultrasound)


PHYSICAL THERAPIST

• Workplace – hospitals, in-patient, out-patient, schools, private practice, house calls
• Description – Physical Therapists help restore function, improve mobility, relieve pain, and prevent or limit permanent physical disabilities of patients suffering from injuries or diseases.


CHIROPRACTOR

• Description – Chiropractor is a health care professional who diagnoses and treats mechanical disorders of the spine and the musculoskeletal system with the intention of improving the health of the nervous system. Chiropractors commonly use spinal adjustments for treatment, although other procedures may be used as well.

MASSAGE THERAPIST

• Workplace – private facilities, health clubs, resorts, retail centers, and country clubs
• Description – Massage therapists massage their customers for therapeutic and remedial reasons. They also administer other kinds of body conditioning. Relax and rejuvenate muscles.


ATHLETIC TRAINER

  • Bachelor’s degree plus training
  • National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA) certification
• Workplace – schools, sports teams, camps, health clubs
• Description – Athletic trainers prevent, examine, and treat athletes’ injuries. They also work with team doctors to provide physical therapy for athletes who are recovering from injuries and to show athletes how to build their strength and avoid further injury.

Circulatory System:

EMT/ PARAMEDIC

  • A high school diploma is usually required to enter a formal emergency medical technician training program.
  • Training is offered at progressive levels: EMT-Basic, EMT-Intermediate, and EMT-Paramedic.
• Workplace – on the scene care, hospital
• Description – Responds to emergency calls to provide efficient and immediate care to the critically ill and injured, and transports the patient to a medical facility.


CARDIOLOGISTS
