Title - Beginning Ballet

Junior High or High School Students -
1. While stretching, let them listen to music that is currently popular, and on occasion, let them dress up like they are from the 80s and dance to 80s music.

Elementary Students -
1. For the elementary students, you should let them listen to familiar songs or nursery music while they stretch. Let them bring in approved CDs to listen to or they can request music and like with the high school, they can also dress out differently than usual.



2. Ballet stretches are like those you would do for a race or before running so you do not pull any muscles. First, you do what is called the straddle stretch - where you have your legs spread apart on each side of your body while sitting down. You lean against one side for about 1 minute and then to the other side, then to the center for about 2 or 3 minutes. The next stretch that you should do is the pike stretch, where you have both legs together and knees are facing the ceiling. For about five minutes, you should lean against the knees with your legs straight (including knees). Then you repeat those while standing up.

3. Teach the basics of ballet as you would teach someone to read, one step at a time. Explain how to do the following:
    plié-bent knees,
    tendu-pointed toe on the floor,
    degagé-same as tendu, but goes through the tendu to brush about 2 in. in the air.
Some ballet steps that are mobile are
    grand jeté which uses a plié and 2 brushes to get high up into the air, and a
    patachat which is also known as the step of the cat. You begin with a plié and lift one leg up at a time.
