Title - Tripods and Headstands

Concept / Topic To Teach:Body Management/ Gymnastics
Standards Addressed:
South Carolina State Physical Education Standards 1, 2, 5, 6
General Goal(s):For the student to be able to perform body management skills necessary for growth and development.
Specific Objectives:TSWBAT perform the actions necessary to successfully complete a tripod and headstand.
Required Materials:
Anticipatory Set (Lead-In):Students will talk about Olympic gymnastics and competition gymnastics.
Step-By-Step Procedures:
- Students will line up and perform two log rolls and two forward rolls, reviewing the previous lessons.
- Students will learn the steps to complete a tripod.
- Cues for Tripod:
a. Start in squat position, like forward roll
b. Hands down and out in front on the mat
c. Lean forward, shifting all weight onto the arms
d. Place top of head out in front of hands on mat.
e. Transfer all weight to the arms and create a triangle with the body and the head.
- Students will learn the steps to complete a headstand
a. Start in tripod position
b. After completing the tripod, slowly push feet and legs straight up into the air.
c. Keep feet together and straight
d. Slowly return to squat position
Plan For Independent Practice:Students will be encouraged practice all skills learned at home, only under the supervision of their parents or adult guardian.
Closure (Reflect Anticipatory Set):Today the students learned a new skill from gymnastics: the tripod and a headstand. Ask the students who can name all of the cues for a tripod? a headstand? Also, the students reviewed the things that were done in the last class. Ask the students to name the activities and some of the important cues. Inform the students that next time in class, they will continue to practice these skills.
