Title - Surviving A Job Interview

Introduction/Aim:
    As part of the Careers and Financial Management course, students learn about the world of work. In this lesson, students discover ways of preparing for a job interview including tips for a successful interview, questions that may be asked, questions they should ask, and interviewing do's and don'ts.
Educational technology being used: Internet

Purpose:
    Students will gain knowledge about successfully interviewing for a job as well as preparing appropriate responses to interview questions.
Procedure:
    Introduce the topic of job interviews and have the class briefly discuss what might take place at an interview.
    Students will be given worksheets to complete while conducting Internet research on interviewing for a job.
    Students will be directed to: www.jobweb.com or other similar website or newspaper article in order to respond to the following:
      1. List five tips for a successful job interview
      2. How should you respond to a question about your weaknesses?
      3. List five illegal interview questions.
      4. What three choices do you have in responding to illegal interview questions?

    Students will next go to: www.quintcareers.com/intvres.html and respond to the following:
      1. What are five questions that YOU can ask an interviewer?
      2. Find the link for Off the Wall Wild Card Interview Questions. Read the article, and then list two questions that you feel are the wildest!
      3. NOW, how would YOU respond if you were asked these two questions while interviewing for a job?
      4. Why do you think an interviewer would ask such crazy questions?
      5. Locate the section on Job Interviewing Do's and Don'ts. List five interviewing Do's you should remember.
      6. List five interviewing Don'ts you should be aware of.
Follow-up: Students will conduct mock interviews in class.
