Title - Peace Pledge

I used this lesson with my children after the terrorist attacks of 9/11/01. We are an upstate community of New York and have been hard hit by these horrific events. My students needed some type of pro-active activity to help them cope.
This lesson is designed around our Pledge of Allegiance. I first put up a poster of the Pledge and we discussed it line by line. We talked about what it means to "Pledge Allegiance," to be "indivisible," and what the symbol of our flag was. I also integrated some background knowledge of our flag by reading a short book about the history of the flag.
After the introduction, I had each child write a pledge of their own. This pledge focused around what they could do to promote peace in our world. I instructed them to use "I" since this about them personally. We then wrote their final products on a dove carrying an olive branch cut-out that I had found in my travels on-line and displayed them in our hallway.
The children's pledges have been very touching.
