Title - Graduation Banquet Song
By - Paula Hrbacek
Primary Subject - Other
Secondary Subject - Music Grade Level - 8

Introduction:
One of the complaints I received during my first year of teaching was that I didn't learn all of the student's names fast enough. This is a song I wrote for the Eighth Grade Banquet at the end of the year that made fun of my poor memorization skills. It can be said like a rap instead of sung.
Song:

When You’re Going to School

To the tune of "When You Go Through Hell" by Rodney Atkins
Words by Paula Hrbacek

When it gets to late September, and it’s time to go on back,
And the bullies start to kick you, knock the books out of your sack,
Grades go from poor to failing, and it can’t get worse than that,
And then they do.

You step off that yellow bus
And you don't know where you are
Think of graduation, but you just can’t see that far.
Ask a question of a senior, and just to tick you off they lie to you…
That’s when you learn the truth.

When you’re going through school,
Keep improving,
Don’t slack off,
If you’re lost, ask a question,
And you might graduate before the teacher ever knows your name.

I forgot about the test, and I just can’t answer that,
With a hundred different teachers and detention on my back,
And I know if I mouth off I’ll be retained into the grade that I am in.

But the good news is there's teachers in every class you see,
Holding out a hand to help you pull your grades back to a C
To make you understand how you can be the very best that you can be.
When you get an education.

When you’re going through school,
Keep improving,
Don’t cut class,
Just walk right to it,
And you might graduate before the teacher ever knows your name.
