Read students the book "Follow the Drinking Gourd" (about the development of the Underground Railroad). This book can be found in most school or public libraries. Then sing the song "Follow the Drinking Gourd" (found in the 6th grade "Music and You" music textbook series - MacMiliian). The song can also be found in the book itself (in some editions). Your school music teacher can help you find the song or make a tape of it for your class.
This lesson takes about 40 minutes and incorporates music, social studies, reading and science.
