QUICK TIPS FOR IMPROVING CLASSROOM BEHAVIOR
-- When walking in the hallways, give the children a challenge that will occupy their minds. Always include quite voices and straight lines. A few examples might be walking on tiptoes, walking on heals, marching, walking sideways, bunny hops, duck walk or waddle, or anything else.
-- Tell the children that you cannot hear them when they yell or talk loudly. Ask them to please speak in a quiet voice. If they forget, remind them in a quiet voice.
-- Walk over to children that are doing something that they are not supposed to be doing. This avoids the teacher having to shout across the room, which in turn would model an inappropriate behavior.
-- Play soft, slow classical music during the day to set a calm, peaceful environment. Feature artists of the week to introduce and familiarize the children with the different composers.
-- Set up the room with a "home-like" environment in mind. Soft light lamps, beanbags, etc. are all great ways to soften the atmosphere.
-- Constantly praise the children when they are doing something that you like, and try to ignore the bad behaviors. This will help eliminate any children acting out for attention.
