By - David Zimmerman
Primary Subject - Other
Secondary Subjects - Language Arts
Grade Level - 2-5
Objective:
To teach the importance of using strategies to solve problems.
1.Explain to the children how important it is to use a strategy when problems need to be solved.
2. Explain to them they will be looking for a reason why certain words are on the blackboard...
3. Lesson:
Divide the board into 2, writing the names Kimmy and Kimberly. Tell the children to figure out why you are putting words on the board that describe what each likes.
**** Kimmy likes anything that has double letters in it...i.e. - kittens, puppies, dollars, football, etc.
**** Kimberly likes anything that does not have double letters in it.
Try to vary the words comparing and contrasting.
At first the kids won't participate, but they will really get into it as the lesson progresses.
Ask the kids prompt questions...especially this question:
If you know the strategy, please give me an example.
This lesson is a lot of fun for both you and the students.
For the students who solve it, you can reward them using your behavior mod procedures.
* The kids will pick this up during reading, and say, "Kimmy would like ________." I've seen it, you'll like this one.
