Topic: What are my options for childcare?
Resources: a daycare facility in the neighborhood, lecture using power point presentation, group discussion, access to computers, video, and video equipment

Rationale:

This is one of many sessions focused on child care. Today we will focus specifically on the options that we all have when looking for a child care provider. The parents will visit two child care facilities, watch videos on others, and talk from experience about the choices that they have. We will the discuss some of the things that we are looking for in each facility that tells us that it is a quality day care provider. We will then discuss the pros and cons of each type of facility.

Objectives:

Upon completion of this session the parents will be able to adequately choose a quality daycare provider for their child by evaluating all of their options, through the writing of assessment papers with 100% accuracy.

To go more in detail the learner's will be able to: evaluate all of the daycare options available in our area adequately choose a provider based on their income, etc. know the signs of a poor quality day care provider list the pros and cons of all facilities get on the internet to find providers suitable to their needs.

Lesson activities:

Teacher's activities:
5 min.
Teacher will ask the class what options are available for child care

Learner's activities:
Learner's will respond with the different types of providers that exist, teacher will prompt them if necessary.

Teacher's activities:
15 min
Video will be shown on nanny care. The Nanny ( a clip from a television show which airs on television)

Learner's activities:
Learner's will watch the video and take notes on it.

Teacher's activities:
10 min.
Teacher will lead in a brief discussion on the video using Powerpoint

Learner's activities:
Learner's will discuss the pros and cons of this kind of child care provider and take notes from Powerpoint

Teacher's activities:
15 min.
Video will be shown on a home day care center. (There are many videos available on this type of care)

Learner's activities:
Learner's will watch the video and take notes on it.

Teacher's activities:
10 min.
Teacher will lead in a brief discussion on the video using Powerpoint

Learner's activities:
Learners will discuss the pros and cons of this kind of child care provider and take notes from Powerpoint

Teacher will lead in a discussion about what we know about relative care. Powerpoint will be used to highlight these pros and cons

Learner's activities:
Learner's will join in the discussion and will discuss some of their experiences with this type of child care. Teacher will prompt them if necessary. Notes are to be taken from the Powerpoint slides

Teacher's activities:

Teacher will lead into a discussion about what we know about stay at home parents. Powerpoint will be used to highlight these pros and cons

Learner's activities:
Learners will join in the discussion and will discuss some of their experiences with this type of child care. Teacher will prompt them if necessary. Notes are to be taken from the Powerpoint slides.

Teacher's activities:
10 min.
Teacher will tell the learners what signs to look for when we visit this daycare facility. Using Powerpoint there will be a list of pros and cons

Learner's activities:
Learner's will take notes from the Powerpoint presentation and prepare to go the the day care center.

Teacher's activities:
30 min
Arrange a visit to a daycare facility that contains an observation booth so as not to disturb the children of providers

Learner's activities:
Observe what is occurring and take notes on the visit

Teacher's activities:
30 min
Prepare an activity sheet in which the students will assess all of the options for a child care provider

Learner's activities:
Learners will complete the 5 worksheets based on their own lifestyles and be able to adequately choose a child care provider that works with their lifestyle
