Title – Back-To-School Expectations
By – Barbara Delnero
Primary Subject – Other
Grade Level – 3-6

After writing the child’s name on the front of a small, brown lunchbag, fill it with the following items and a list of explanations:

  • 1 Hershey hug ~ everyone can use a hug or a positive compliment
  • 1 rubber band ~ everyone needs to bend and stretch to compromise
  • 1 toothpick ~ to always “pick out” the positives in a person
  • 1 eraser ~ we all make mistakes
  • 1 penny ~ because each person’s thoughts count
  • 1 candy mint ~ because each is worth “a mint.”
  • 1 tissue ~ to dry someone’s tears
  • 1 Band-Aid ~ to heal someone’s hurt
  • 1 Q-tip ~ to always listen before responding
  • Sugar cookies (in capitals) of their first and last initial ~ to show that they are important

These items allow many opportunities for discussion, getting to know each child, and seeing how they articulate their thoughts.
