Lesson objective: Students will explain the feelings portrayed by different pieces of music.
The lesson starts off by playing "Under the Sea". When this song is over, the teacher explains to the class the feelings that the song is portraying and why. The teacher then shows the students what instruments help to convey that "feeling" and why. Also, explaining what musical dynamic changes help to also convey the "feeling".
Next, the teacher lets the students hear "Canon in D" done by one artist and ask the students:
- What feelings does this song convey?
- What instruments might help to make to create this feeling?
- ;What musical dynamics did you hear? (i.e. loud or soft)
- What difference is there in the feelings that "Canon in D" portrays and "Under the Sea" conveys?
- What helped to make these differences?
Lastly, the teacher will play another version on "Canon in D" and then ask the students:
- What feelings does this song convey?
- What instruments might help to make to create this feeling?
- What musical dynamics did you hear? (i.e. loud or soft)
- How where they able to make the same song convey different feelings?
