Title - Understanding Music Motifs

This lesson plan is designed to help students understand motives used in music.

Time: 30 minutes
Materials: Fugue in G Minor by JS Bach.
National MENC Standards-

Take the melody (motif) to Fugue in G minor and add the following words:
I, I want, I want a chocolate donut.
I, I want a chocolate donut, I, I want a chocolate donut.

Teach this to the class as one part and then in a round. (Sentence 1 first then sentence 2).

After the class has a good bearing on this motif, play the Fugue by Bach and have the students count how many times they hear the motif in the piece. As they listen, have the class point out what instruments are playing the motif.

When the piece is over with, ask your class how many times they heard the motive. Then play the piece again and count together.

All of my classes love this lesson and especially love the donut words. Guaranteed that every time they hear the piece in the future they'll sing the donut words and remember the motif.
