Primary Subject - Music
Grade Level - 1 - 4

A new take on the familiar game!

Review different rhythmic patterns with the class.

Identify ONE pattern as your "magic pattern", such as: Ta Rest Ti-ti Ta. This is the ONLY pattern that they are allowed to sit on. Have your students walk in a circle as they echo different patterns you clap out. With 1st and 2nd grades, it helps to say the rhythm syllables along with the clapping. Older grades should audiate the syllables as they're clapping. Students are not allowed to sit on any other pattern except for you special pattern, if they do, they're out!

Take away a different number of chairs each time (I usually get screams of joy when I take away at least 2). The excitement builds until the last 2 students remain and I usually call it a tie.

Explanation and completion of the game usually takes around 25 minutes.
