Title – Not a lesson plan, but a quick “lining up” song

Procedure:

I use this at the end of my music class, but it could be used in a regular classroom as well. It is to the “tune” of the typical military call-response cadence (the type that at the end says “SOUND OFF 1-2, SOUND OFF 3-4, CADENCE COUNT 1-2-3-4, 1-2…3,4!). I sing/chant and then they echo after me as they are lining up.

“Third grade fall into your line”

(they echo)

“Talking now would be a crime”

(they echo)

“Cross your arms and face the door”

(they echo)

“Or we’ll do this more and more”

(they echo)

“I am”

(echo)

“ready”

(echo)

“I am ready for the…hallway!”

(we all sing/chant this together)

Variations:

As a music teacher, you can apply all kinds of elements of music into this and have them sing exactly how you sing (p, f, largo, allegro, add crescendos/decrescendos, accel./rit., legato/staccato, etc). Then ask them questions about the way you sang it.

Once they know this song and line up with it consistently, I let my “helper” sing it and the class echoes. This gives me another chance to hear the class sing without me and an individual voice/solo (and they feel like it’s an honor to get to lead it).
