Title - Football Flashcard Game

Objective:
The student will be able to identify notes found on the treble staff.
Materials:
- A posterboard with a football field drawn on it. Do not forget to add goalposts and goal lines. On every 5 yard line put a piece of Velcro.
- A small plastic or paper football, with a piece of Velcro attached to it. This way it will attach to your posterboard.
- A bag with cards that have numbers on them. To make the cards, start with 5, and number by 5 until you reach 50.
- Flashcards that have every note found on the treble staff.
- Chalk and Board for Scorekeeping.
Procedure:
Divide the class into 2 teams, and pick one student to be scorekeeper. Write on the board First Down, Ten to Go. Also, make a grid for points (team 1, team 2). Have the team captains (I usually choose the first or last in the group to fill this position.) decide if they are going to play defense or offense. I usually have them do "rock, paper, scissors" to decide who gets to pick first.
One member from each team comes to the front of the room. For "kickoff", the defense picks a number from the bag. That is where you place the Velcro football on the board. I show them a flashcard. The first person who answers correctly gets control of the ball. For example, if it is a first down, and the team on defense answers correctly, the ball moves 10 yards behind the line of scrimmage, and the down on the board would read 2nd down 20 to go. If the offense gets it correct, the ball moves by 10 yards in the direction of their goalpost, and the down stays at first down. If they both answer incorrectly or correctly at the same time, the down changes to two, the ball stays where it is, and the yardage is still at 10. Basically, all football rules apply. You can have a safety , when the ball gets to the 10 yard line.
Points are as follows: touchdown is 6 points, and a safety is two. There are no extra points or field goals. When the offense gets to 4th down, they get to "kick" by picking a number out of the bag. After the kick, the team that was defense is now offense, and vice-versa. My kids love this game!
