Title – Building A Rhythm Tree

This lesson involves learning rhythmic values, counting beats and ultimately creating a beautiful bulletin board display.
MATERIALS:
Pre-made tree trunk with many empty branches. You can use oak tag or construction paper. This can be as tall as you’d like, but take into account the number of students you have.
Pre-cut green leaves (again, from construction paper)
Markers, crayons or pencils.
As a warm up, review notes and their values.
Have the students take ONE leaf and draw ONE of the following on it: whole note, half note, quarter note, eighth note(s) or quarter rest.
On each of the branches, have the students arrange leaves that add up to a certain number of beats into a cluster.
So for example, one branch can be a measure of 4/4, one can be 3/4.
Allow the students to use any combination they wish.
By the end of the lesson, you will have a lush and full rhythm tree!
