Title – Creative Music Game using language arts By – Ginny Bates Primary Subject – Music Secondary Subjects – Language Arts Grade Level – 3-5 ENCORE I use this game to start off the school year, and then as a reward later. They love it! The game consists of three categories (you can add more later if you like!) nouns, verbs and adjectives. One team will be chosen to go first. They will pick a category. You will then give them a single word from that category. For example, the team picks nouns. You give them the word “star”. That team will then have one minute to come up with and sing at least seven words of a song with the word “star” in it. They must sing the song and it must be the correct tune. If they sing the song correctly, with the correct word in it, it then becomes the opposite team’s turn to sing a song with the SAME word. They will also have one minute. It goes back and forth between teams until no one can think of another song with that word in it. The point is then awarded to the last team to successfully sing the appropriate song. (I have had several classes where the entire class time was spent on the word, “love”.) Here’s a quick run-down. 1. Divide class into two groups. (If you want to add a twist, to the game for older students, try this. Have one team pick a category, then the other team must come up with a word for that category to give them. It is harder than it seems, because the team must be able to think of at least two songs for that word. The opposite team goes first!!)
