Title - End-of-Year Music Idea: Sing around the Campfire
By - Denise Taylor
Primary Subject - Music
Secondary Subjects - Language Arts
Grade Level - K-5
Procedure:
The last lesson of the year in my music class is singing around a campfire. I put glow-in-the-dark stars up around my room, make a fake campfire that is lit and put on some nature music of crickets chirping and a stream babbling. There's something about a campfire (even a fake one) that makes everyone relax and just reflect on things. We talk about all the things we accomplished during the year and what our goals for the coming year could be. We sing silly campfire songs and giggle until our sides hurt. This could be combined with language arts as we tell at least one story. For music, the story could be from the life of a composer. We also discuss how nature has its own form of music with streams and crickets. If you want to go to the extra effort, you could give each student a pretzel stick with a marshmallow on it to "roast marshmallows" around the fire. This is a very fun end-of-year activity.
