Title - Exploring Music Instruments Using the Internet

Note: This lesson plan makes use of a worksheet that is not included. You should be able to develop your own worksheet or perform the lesson plan without the worksheet.
Topic:
Students will learn about musical instruments, their sounds, and compositions for instruments by visiting websites and answering questions on a teacher made worksheet. Students will also perform a variety of activities with other students in the classroom.
Standards:
Students will develop skill in listening to selected familiar works by such composers as Bach and Greig; students will describe them in terms of the elements of music. Students will develop skill in moving and listening to musical examples from America; students will describe these examples in terms of the elements of music. Students will describe distinguishing characteristics of representative music genres and styles from a variety of cultures. Students will learn about instruments of the orchestra and their sounds.
Objectives:
1. Students will gain knowledge about the orchestra and its seating arrangement.
2. Students will listen to works by Beethoven, Schubert and Greig.
3. Students will learn about sound as energy.
4. Students will identify important vocabulary.
5. Students will answer three questions about musical instruments.
6. Students will listen to and recognize sound files of various instruments.
7. Students will gain knowledge of the National Anthem.
8. Students will create movement to the National Anthem.
9. Students will play classroom instruments.
10. Students will create their own instruments.
Goals:
1. To broaden students knowledge of instruments and their sounds.
2. To broaden students knowledge of the National Anthem.
3. To allow students to credit their own instruments and play them.
4. To allow students to create movements to the National Anthem
Materials:
1 computer for every 3-4 students; teacher made worksheets; classroom instruments; combs and wax paper for kazoos, spoons; recording of the National Anthem; overhead of the words of the National Anthem; recording of the local symphony orchestra or school band (optional)
Procedures:
The teacher needs to bookmark sites for students if possible. Project and instrument stations should be set up prior to starting class. Students will find the lesson plan site previously bookmarked by the teacher. Students will print one copy of the lesson for the computer group. Students will follow the directions printed out below.
Lesson Instructions for Students:
Print the entire lesson out for your group. You should work with your group but do answer the questions on your own. There are 3 parts to this lesson. You must finish each part before proceeding to the next.
PART 1:
*Go to the website tqjunior.thinkquest.org
*Click on the ThinkQuest Website
*Click on Library of Entries to the left
*In the search box type "Energy In The Air: Sounds from the Orchestra" Click exact match and go
* Click on the link to "Energy In The Air: Sounds from the Orchestra"
*Click the Thinkquest Junior box-open the new window
*Read the introductory page
*Draw a diagram on your paper using the words only of the seating arrangement fo the orchestra.
*Click on the Orchestra-read; listen to a sound file by Beethoven, Schubert and Greig; write down on your paper the composition you listened to and the composer.
*Click back one page
*Click on Sound is Energy-read; click on the underlined words; write the words and definitions on your paper.
* Pick one project to try
*Write the project name and instructions on your page
*Everyone in your group may go to the project area and try your project. Write down your results.
PART 2:
*Go to the website www.lehigh.edu/zoellner/quiz1.html
*Click on play it and listen.
*Click on the correct answer. If you are correct it will tell you. Then click on next quiz. if you are wrong try again until you get it correct. Write the correct answers on your paper.
*Do all three questions and listening files.
*After the last question click on Musical Instrument Encyclopedia
*Click on the arrow. Listen to 4 instruments. Write their names on your paper.
*Now you may proceed to the class instrument tables. Play each instrument and listen to the different sounds.
PART 3:
(Teachers should prepare this ahead of time.)
*The most important song a band or orchestra will ever learn in the "National Anthem."
*Ask the students "What should we do when the National Anthem is played?" (stand)
*Play the recording of the National Anthem. Students should stand.
*Discuss the importance of the National Anthem.
*Students should split into their groups and create movements to the National Anthem.
*Other Options--Students could sing the National Anthem. No recording use your school band.
Assessment:
Students should turn in their worksheets at the end of part 2.
These worksheets can be used for assessment.
Have students tell you two new things they have learned from this lesson.
Allow students to search for websites about instruments, orchestras and the National Anthem.
