Title - Time for Fractions and Percents
By - Anita Baresel
Primary Subject - Math
Grade Level - 4-5

Manipulatives teach multi-sensory style....

Materials: Scissors, three shades of paper, markers

Have students cut three concentric circles, each from a different color of paper.

Have students draw a clock on the largest circle and place numbers on it. Describe clockwise rotation, 1/4 hours, 1/2 hours, 3/4 hours. Demonstrate that these fractions can become percentages and decimals.

1/4=25% or .25
1/2=50% or .50
3/4=75% or .75

Have them fold the second circle into halves and quarters and write this information at the proper places on the circle.

Finally, use the smallest circle to demonstrate thirds. Have them cut out the center, and line it up with 20 minutes after the hour. Have them put on

1/3=33% or .333

and then on the twenty until the hour

2/3=66% or 666.

Enrichment: Allow them to explore how to take 1/5 of the hour.

This visual math lesson can then be displayed in the classroom or taken home.
