Title – The BIG Inch

Materials: Posterboard or cardboard, rulers

Time: 1 hour

Objective: To create a prop that will aid the student in learning the fractional units of a tape measure to 1/16th.

Procedures: Each student needs to have a section of cardboard that is around a minimum of 5 – 6 inches tall and 13 inches in length. Take the length of posterboard and place a beginning mark that is 3 inches tall. This mark represents the beginning number (such as 0 inches) on the ruler. Each mark should be placed ¾ inches apart. Varying heights are used to distinguish fractional measurements. Marks that represent 1/16th of an inch can be 1 inch tall, 1/8th of an inch marks an inch and a half, ¼ of an inch equals 2 inches tall, and one-half of an inch is represented by lines that are 2 ½ inches tall. At the end of the process, the student should have a magnified inch to aid them in reading fractional measurements.
