1. The student will be able to construct the ladybug according to instructions and without error.
   
2. The student will be able to count the spots on the ladybug's wings in order to accurately predict what number is hidden on the inside.
   
3. The student will be able to set up and complete an addition problem using his/her ladybug and a partner's.

• Paper plates (3 per student)
  
• Markers
  
• Scissors
  
• Stapler
  
• Paper fastener

Construct an example ladybug to show to the class. Make sure to put some time into the example and make it fun for the students to look at and use.

Have the students sit at their desks where they can clearly see you and the example.

Use the example ladybug you constructed to grab the attention of the students.

1. Pass out all materials.
   
2. Show the students the example.
   
3. Explain to them how the ladybug is used.
   
4. Have them follow the directions on how to construct the ladybug.
   1. The first paper plate will be the body.
      
   2. They should write a number boldly on the body.
      
   3. The wings should be made by cutting the second paper plate in half.
      
   4. Draw the proper number of spots on the wings (matching the bold number you wrote).
      
   5. Cut the head out of the last paper plate (just a circle).
      
   6. Staple the head to the body.
      
   7. Use the paper fastener to attach the wings to the body.
      
   8. Decorate with markers.
5. Have the children check their neighbor's spots and number.
   
6. Have the students add their spots with their neighbor's spots to make a addition problem.
   
7. See if they did this correctly.
   
8. Go over everything they just learned.

Ask students to demonstrate and explain what we learned today. Sum up activity.
