Title - Skittles Graphing
By - Jennifer Cook
Primary Subject - Math
Grade Level - 3

Objectives:
North Carolina Standard Course of Study Objective 4.01
    • Students will create an individual tally chart, pictograph, and bar graph for their bag of Skittles candy.
    • Collect, organize, analyze, and display data to solve problems.
Materials Needed:
  • One bag of Skittles candy for each student
  • Crayons for each student
  • Pencils
  • Copy of 1-inch graph paper or other graph paper of your choosing
  • Lined paper for each student
Procedure:
  1. Give each student their bag of Skittles candy. You can purchase an individual bag for each student or you can put Skittles into baggies for them.
  2. Have students sort the candy into color groups.
  3. Then have the students create a tally chart to organize their data. I usually ask my students questions about which color they have the most of, least of, total number of candy, etc.
  4. As a class, review what a pictograph is. As a class come up with a way to represent the Skittles candy with a picture. We usually end up using a circle.
  5. Remind the students that the pictograph has a title and key. In the key, each circle represents a certain number of that candy. We usually end up using a key of each
    O = 2 Skittles.
  6. Students then fill in their own pictograph.
  7. Review bar graphs with the class. Discuss putting a title and axis labels on the graph. At this time have students label these things on their graph.
  8. Students will color one square for each candy they have on their bar graph. I usually have them use the color of the candy for that bar.
  9. Discuss as a class the findings. This is a good review lesson for graphing.
