Title – Rainforest Math – Fruit Loop Graphing

Introduction:

Ask the students if they have ever eaten Fruit Loops cereal. Explain that today they are going to be sorting fruit loops into color groups – but they should NOT eat the fruit loops! If the students work quietly, they can get a separate cup of fruit loops to eat.

Lesson:

Each student will be given a baggy of 20 fruit loops and a blank graph. The graph has a bar for each fruit loop color (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple) up to the number twenty. Once they have sorted their fruit loops into color groups, they need to count how many is in each group. They then color up to that line on the corresponding bar on the graph.

This lesson goes really well with a rainforest theme – you can connect the Fruit Loops to its representative bird Toucan Sam.
