Title - Music Math
By - Dawn Moore
Primary Subject - Math
Secondary Subjects - Music
Grade Level - 4-6
Music Math is a great way to reinforce math skills while learning and reinforcing notes and note values.
I usually use this for upper grades and teach order of operations. I first write the equation using notes. Ex:
(1/4 note + 1/4 note) + (1/2 note + 1/2 note) - (1/2 note - whole note) = 4 or a whole note
I explain how to always solve what is in the parentheses first, then translate the notes into number values. In number form, it would look like this(1 + 1) + (2 + 2) - (2 - 4) = 4
(2) + (4) + (-2) = 4
(6) + (-2) = 4
4 = Whole Note
My kids love this and love to challenge one another. It is a great brain stretching activity that kills two birds with one stone.
You can make this as easy or as difficult as you like. I also use notes outside of the parentheses for algebraic equations.
