ME AND MY

SHADOW

Topic: measurement

Grade Level:

1 – 3

Materials

chalk, measuring
tape, pencil and paper

Description of Activity:

On
a nice sunny day, take the students outside and have them get
in partners. Repeat this activity three times during the day,
in the morning, around noon, and in the afternoon. Have one partner
stand still while the other partner marks with chalk the beginning
and end of the shadow. Measure the length of the shadow. Repeat
with the other partner.

Extensions:

You could
include subtraction, by having the students figure the difference
in the lengths between the shadows. Science could also be incorporated
by discussing why the shadow changes lengths.
