Subject – Math

Grade Level – 1-4

NCTM Standard: Math Connections

Objective: -TSW be able to recognize the following geometrical shapes:

triangle, quadrilateral, pentagon, hexagon, octagon, nonagon, and
decagon.

-TSW demonstrate understanding by being able to identify
the shapes listed above.

Materials: The Greedy Triangle by Marilyn Burns, geoboards, geo bands (rubber bands), graph paper

Anticipatory Set:

*Sit in reading area of classroom.

*”Listen for the names of the different shapes. I will ask you to repeat them after the story.”

*Read the story

*”What were some shapes that were talked about in the story?”

*Transition the students back to their desks.

Guided Practice:

*Have the students make the shape that the teacher makes on his/her geoboards.

*Ask the students what the name of the shape is…hint: count the number of lines

*Make 5-10 shapes (depending on what grade you teach this with)

*Give students a chance to experiment with their shapes by giving them 5-10 minutes to play with the geoboard.

Closure:

Discuss what the names of shapes are.

Independent Work:

*Have students pair up. Each pair needs to draw (on the provided graph paper) a shape talked about in this book to hang up the classroom for future reference.

Criteria for project: correct amount of lines, straight lines, name of the
shape inside of the shape, the lines reach close to the edge.
