Title - "The Greedy Triangle"

Grade Level - 1-4
NCTM Standard: Math Connections
Objective: -TSW be able to recognize the following geometrical shapes:
triangle, quadrilateral, pentagon, hexagon, octagon, nonagon, and decagon.
-TSW demonstrate understanding by being able to identify the shapes listed above.

Materials: The Greedy Triangle by Marilyn Burns, geoboards, geo bands (rubber bands), graph paper

Anticipatory Set:
*Sit in reading area of classroom.
*"Listen for the names of the different shapes. I will ask you to repeat them after the story."
*Read the story
*"What were some shapes that were talked about in the story?"
*Transition the students back to their desks.

Guided Practice:
*Have the students make the shape that the teacher makes on his/her geoboards.
*Ask the students what the name of the shape is...hint: count the number of lines
*Make 5-10 shapes (depending on what grade you teach this with)
*Give students a chance to experiment with their shapes by giving them 5-10 minutes to play with the geoboard.

Closure:
Discuss what the names of shapes are.

Independent Work:
*Have students pair up. Each pair needs to draw (on the provided graph paper) a shape talked about in this book to hang up the classroom for future reference.

Criteria for project: correct amount of lines, straight lines, name of the shape inside of the shape, the lines reach close to the edge.
