Topic: Fractions
Grade Level: 5
Name of Activity: Finding Fractions in
Everyday Life
Materials Needed: graph paper. pencil
Description of Activity:
Have a class discussion about fractions in everyday life. Ask
students where they can find fractions? (cooking, measuring, etc.).
For homework, have them watch a favorite television show. Have
them keep a record of how much of the 1/2 hour - long show
was actually the program, how much was commercial advertising,
and how much was other. Have the students make a chart (see attached).
The next day, students can answer: How much time was used for
commercials? What fraction of the whole show was that amount?
Have students compare findings. Make a chart, compare prime - time
shows with morning or afternoon programs. Have students answer:
If commercials appear that same fraction of an entire day, how
long is commercial time in 24 hours? What percent would commercials
be of an entire day?
** Students can also keep charts of their days - what fraction
of the school day is spent on math, science, etc.? What fraction
of the day is spent sleeping, playing? Students could use their
findings to create a more efficient daily schedule.
