Title - Fraction Matchin'
By - Leslie Clark
Primary Subject - Math
Grade Level - 5-6
Objective: To practice adding or subtracting fractions with unlike denominators
Materials: 3 X 5 note cards
Grade level: 5-6
You need enough notecards for each person in your class to have one. On half of your 3 X 5 notecards write an unlike denominator addition or subtraction problem. On the other half of the note cards, write the corresponding common denominators to the problems on the other half. In random order, hand out the note cards and have the students find their matching partner and work the problem out. An example follows:
| card 1 matches card 2 |
1
2
+
1
4
|
4

|
I had my students pick a person to present the problem to the class, giving them another opportunity to rehearse the procedure. I, then, went through the same procedure on the back side of the card, only making the problem to which they have to find a different partner with whom to match.
