Title - Fun with counting coins

OVERVIEW: The students will learn to match a quarter, penny, nickel, and a dime to the amount specified throughout activities. They will learn that we use these coins everyday of our lives. By the end of the lesson, the students will be able to look at a coin and tell what it is called and how much it is worth.
OJECTIVES:
STUDENTS WILL:
1. Learn to distinguish the coins quarter, penny, nickel, and dime.
2. Match the coin with its monetary value
3. Participate in group activities involving the first two objectives
MATERIALS:
You will need pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters for group activities.
You might also like to do a power point presentation as introduction.
A larger sized scale to represent the coins as a reference for the children.
PROCEDURE:
INTRODUCTION: introduce the lesson by telling what we use the coins for in everyday life. Next show power point presentation describing each coin. Refer to poster of the larger sized scale of coins so that students may make reference if needed.
MAIN ACTIVITY: Split children into groups. Hand out baggies with pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters, and numbered cards. The students will then work as a team to figure out how many ways they can use the coins to equal up the monetary amount on the card. This will continue until they have gone through all the cards in the baggie.
CLOSURE/CONCLUSION: After the group activity, review all that's been taught and answer any questions the students might ask.
FOLLOW UP: Move onto dollars and how many coins take to equal the monetary value of the dollars
