By: Barbara Barbieri McGrath
Fruit slices
paper
black marker

Objectives: Being able to make a 1 to 1 ratio between cheerios and counting to ten. Also, do a one to one ratio with pieces of fruit with the children.

Activity:

Read the book the Cheerios Counting book to the class. All together have the children count the cheerios together up to ten in the book. Also have them count the fruit on each page and see if they know what the fruit on the page is.

Take the paper and start by writing number on each page in large print from 1 to 10. Put one number on each sheet of paper. Have the students in pairs look at the cards. Then pass out the number card/paper and give one sheet to each pair of students. Have the students work with their partner to figure out how many cheerios they need to equal the number on the paper. Then give the students a handful of Cheerios and have them count out the number on their paper. They can then eat the rest of the Cheerios they have. After each child is done have them tell you and the class what their number is and then count out the cheerios.

Extension:
Have the students on their own piece of paper glue cheerios on the paper and then try to make the number themselves on that paper. Hang up in the classroom!!
