Title - Skip Counting - 10 minute lesson
By - Carolyn Currins
Primary Subject - Math
Grade Level - 1st grade

Objective: Preliminary lesson on counting by two's.

Rationale: By learning to count by two's, students will be able to count large amounts of items quicker.

Materials Needed: Pencil and Paper

Lesson Plan:
    1. Anticipatory Set: Ask, "Who would like to volunteer to count the class?" Have a student stand up and count the class. Most likely, a student will count by ones to accomplish this task. Then ask the students, "Is there a faster way to count everyone." If students don't come up with it themselves, ask them if counting every other person would help.

    2. Stated Lesson Objective: Explain to the class they are going to practice counting by two's up to 100, so that eventually counting large groups of people or objects by two's will be faster than counting by ones.

    3. Teacher Input: Teacher will lead the class in a clapping game starting with '0' and counting to '10' by clapping on every other number and saying the next number. This will get the class warmed up and ready to complete the next task. After the class understands how to count to 10 by two's have each person in the class participate in counting by two's until each student has said a number.

    4. Independent/Group Work: Have the class get into 4 groups and take out one sheet of paper and a pen or pencil. Tell students "We are going to practice writing to 100 by two's. Each table group has one piece of paper. When I say 'go' the first person will write 2, the next will write 4, and so on until your table group has written by two's all the way to 100." Explain that the paper should be passed clockwise. Have the students repeat the instructions. When the groups are finished, they are to put down their pencils and look at the teacher. When each group has finished, the teacher will go around the room and check their papers.

    5. Check Understanding: Now that the students have mastered counting from 0 to 100 by two's, have them follow the same procedure to count from 1 to 101 by two's.

    6. Closure: Ask students "Why is it important to know how to skip count?"
