Pupils should know the times table.

Pupils should be able to recall their times table and make complete number sentences (simple and complex)

• Multiplication strips (question strips & number strips)
  
• Tokens e.g. ice cream sticks/coloured chips

Introduction
1. Pupils recite the times table.
2. Elicit multiplication number sentences that give the answer 12 from pupils. E.g. 2 x 6, 6 x 2, 3 x 4, 4 x 3
3. Demonstrate a complex number sentence involving + or - (5 x 2 + 2, 3 x 5 - 3).
4. Explain to pupils that though the sentences involve other operations, they still arrive at 12 as the answer.
5. Explain that number sentences are solved from left to right with multiplication phrases being solved before addition phrases.
6. Demonstrate a complex number sentence involving + or - phrase before a x phrase (6 + 2 x 3, 4 + 4 x 2).
Development
7. Explain to pupils that though the sentences involve other operations, they still arrive at 12 as the answer, because we solve the multiplication part first, then the addition. (2 x 3 = 6, 6 + 6 = 12; 4 x 2 = 8, 4 + 8 = 12)
8. Introduce the multiplication strips to the pupils.
9. Get three pupils to demonstrate the previous examples by holding up the strips. E.g. demonstrate 5 x 2 + 2 by holding up the question strip "5 x 2", number strip "2" and "12". Verbally read the number sentence 5 x 2 + 2 = 12.

Activity
10. 1/3 of the pupils to take a question strip each.
11. 2/3 of the pupils to take a number strip each.
12. Pupils will start to search for corresponding strips to make number sentences.
13. When they have made a complete number sentence, the pupils will come to the teacher to verify the sentence.
14. The teacher will check and write the sentences on the board. The teacher will then issue a token to these pupils.
15. After that, these pupils will exchange their existing strips for new strips from the pool of spare strips and start making new number sentences.
16. Note that pupils are not allowed to call out their targets but to hold up their strips and go around looking for the strips that could make a complete number sentence.
17. At the end of the activity, the pupil with the most number of tokens will get a reward.

Follow-up
18. Pupils will complete a worksheet as homework.
