Title - Order of Operations in the Real World

Concept / Topic To Teach: Order of operations in real world situations.
TAKS (Texas) Standards Addressed: 6.2(e): Use order of operations to simplify whole number expressions (without exponents) in problem solving situations.
6.11 Underlying processes and mathematical tools. The student applies Grade 6 mathematics to solve problems connected to everyday experiences, investigations in other disciplines, and activities in and outside of school.
General Goal(s): Students will learn to make numerical expression using real world situations. They will use pictures (taken with a camera or from the web) to help explain how to create a numerical expression given a word problem. They will create a digital story explaining the process they used to come up with their numerical expression.
Specific Objectives: - The student will be able to use the order of operations to solve numerical expressions.
- The student will be able to make a numerical expression if given a word problem.
Prerequisites: Knowledge on how to use Photo Story 3, PowerPoint, internet and other technologies will be needed.
Required Materials: - Computer
- Digital camera
- Internet access

- Order of operation word problems.
Anticipatory Set (Lead-In): Teacher should start off by showing them an example of what they will do today. Show a digital story showing the word problem and the steps taken to get the final numerical expression and answer.
Step-By-Step Procedures:
- Students will be placed in groups of four and each group will get a word problem.
- For example:
Joe buys 2 shirts at $8.00 each. He also buys a pair of jeans for $20.00 that gets a $3.00 discount.
Write a numerical expression and solve. |
- Using digital photos or the internet, the students will find pictures to tie into their word problem.
- For example:

discount =  dollar = 
- After they find the appropriate pictures, have them create step-by-step instructions on how they made their numerical expression. PowerPoint can be used to help organize the steps by slide.
2 shirts + jeans - discount = cost
(2 x $8 shirts) + ($20 jeans - $3 discount) = X dollars total cost
(2 x 8) + (20 - 3) =

- Using Photo Story, they can create their step-by-step with pictures and words. Narration can also be added if microphones are available.
- The final product should result in many different word problems in digital story form; each with pictures and numerical expressions.
Plan for Independent Practice: Give the word problems to the whole class so they can solve them individually. After they have solved the problems, they can play the corresponding digital story to check their answer.
Closure (Reflect Anticipatory Set): Close the topic and relate back to how order of operations is used in real life situations.
Assessment Based on Objectives: Students should be able to create numerical expressions and solve them to get an answer.
Adaptations (For Students with Learning Disabilities): Students should be assisted using the different technologies. They can be given specific problems that are simpler and notes that specify where they can find the pictures.
Extensions (For Gifted Students): Students can come up with their own word problems. They can make the digital story for the solution that could be shared with the other students.
