Title - Roman Numeral Math
By - Telitha Lucier
Secondary Subjects - Math
Grade Level - 9-12
This lesson gives the history of Roman Numerals and it also lets students practice some math skills using Roman Numerals instead of Arabic Numerals.
Roman Numerals:
Give the students the background information and what each of the seven letters stands for in modern day times.
| I | 1 |
| V | 5 |
| X | 10 |
| L | 50 |
| C | 100 |
| D | 500 |
| M | 1000 |
I had the students complete a chart much like the one below, and then they were asked to complete the math problems (in Arabic Numerals). Though the problems are more to a high school level, they could be adapted to fit any age group.
Fill in the chart:
| XX | |
| | 98 |
| | 54 |
| XC | |
| MMVI | |
| XLV | |
| | 150 |
| | 7000 |
| XXX | |
| LM | |
| | 450 |
| | 347 |
| | 555 |
| LVIII | |
Complete the following problems:
L - XV =
CL + IV =
M - DL =
C/X =
-VII/IV(-VII) =
VII + III(V) - V =
-III(VIII) =
