Title - Mardi Gras Parade

The schools in New Orleans are closed for Mardi Gras. We have a lot of local parades and parties during that time - nothing about pancakes. Our local discount store saves shoeboxes for the teachers. Students also bring in boxes. In class, the students decide on a class theme (like famous children's books, storybook characters or authors, countries of the world, animals of North America, etc." for their Mardi Gras parade, then decorate their shoe boxes to be a float that follows in that theme. All the "floats" collect and parade around the school hallways. (Each student carries his own.) Of course, there is parade music over the intercom. The float people may throw beads (traditional inexpensive plastic necklaces) if they wish. Later, the floats are lined up in the gym and several parents come and award prize ribbons for the best float for each grade. Each class celebrates the closing of the day with a traditional King Cake donated by a parent.
