By - Laura Beeler
Primary Subject - Language Arts
Grade Level - 3rd- 5th Grade
GRADE LEVEL/SUBJECT: Language Arts, Writing, Celebrations
PURPOSE:
1. To expose students to several stories from different points of view.
2. To engage students in creating a Venn Diagram to compare and contrast different views on the same topic.
3. To provide students with the opportunity to write a creative story from a characters point of view
OBJECTIVES:
- Students will explore "point of view" in literature and their own writing.
- Students will create a VENN diagram to display two different points of view towards Thanksgiving.
- Students will write a story from the point of view of a turkey near Thanksgiving.
MATERIALS:
- The Three Little Pigs
- The True Story of the Three Little Pigs by Mr. Wolfe
- Piggie Pie by Margie Palatini
- 'Twas the Night Before Thanksgiving by Dav Pilky
- Large Sheet of Paper for a Venn Diagram
- Notebook Paper
ACTIVITIES AND PROCEDURES:
1. Read with the students the two separate stories about the Three Little Pigs. Use these examples to illustrate point of view and the effect it can have on the story.
2. Using a VENN Diagram, organize the students' thoughts and feelings about the Celebration of Thanksgiving, first from the classes point of view and second from a turkey's point of view. Highlight how extremely different one celebration can be viewed from two different groups.
3. Have the students create a plan for a story from a turkeys point of view and how they escape being eaten on Thanksgiving. Read the stories Piggie Pie and Twas the Night Before Thanksgiving to help generate ideas about animal escape.
4. Students write stories from their plan making sure to have a clear beginning, middle, and end. Use any self, peer, or teacher editing that applies.
5. Share stories for Thanksgiving!
