Title - Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwiches
By - Misty Hembree
Primary Subject - Language Arts
Secondary Subjects -
Grade Level - 2-4
A nice and fun way to end a unit on paragraphs would be to allow students to write a how-to paragraph on making peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.

Materials Needed: peanut butter, jelly, bread, plates, plastic spoons/ knives, pencils and paper

How to start: Ask the students if they like peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. Could they explain how to make a PB&J sandwich to someone that had never made/eaten one?

Review the steps for making the sandwich using the book and cassette "Peanut Butter and Jelly." After playing the cassette and reading the book, verbally review the steps. Help the students start their how-to paragraph by reviewing the rules of writing a paragraph and writing the topic sentence on the board. After the students complete their paragraph, let them read it to you (the teacher) or another student. Give each student the materials he/ she needs to make the sandwich (only the materials he/ she asked for in the paragraph). Finally, ask the student to make the sandwich following his/ her own directions. If he/ she makes the sandwich correctly using his/ her own instructions, let him/ her eat the sandwich.

Other options: Let one student give their how-to paragraph to another student. See if the other student can read and follow the directions.

I used this lesson in a Resource classroom. It is inexpensive and easy to clean up. The students enjoyed the lesson and their sandwiches. They found and corrected their mistakes by themselves as they tried to follow their own directions.
