Title - Contraction Poem

Teaching Strategy: Whole Group
Time Required: 30-45 min

1. Concept: Contractions.
    The students will be writing contractions in a poem.
2. ALCOS: 20.
    Demonstrate vocabulary growth developed through reading and listening to literature.
3. Behavioral Objectives:
    The student will be able to:
    1. Write contractions in the correct way.
    2. Spell all words correctly.
    3. Use grammar correctly.
4. Material:
  • Judith Viorst's poem, If I Were In Charge of the World,
  • copies of the poem with missing sentences,
  • shakers.
5. Teaching Procedures:
    A. Motivation:
      Would you like to be in charge of the world for a day? What are something's that you would change about the world? Today we are going to read a poem and then write our own words to it.

    B. Instructional Procedures:
      1. The teacher will give each student a copy of the poem by Judith Viorst.
      2. The teacher will read the poem through one time while the students keep a steady beat with the shakers.
      3. The teacher and students will read the poem together while keeping the steady beat.
      4. The teacher will give each student a copy of the poem with missing words.
      5. The students will be told that they have to use at least three contractions in their poem. If the line has a contraction in it, they have to underline it.
      6. The students will fill out their poems and must use correct grammar and spelling.
      7. They will have to look the words that they can not spell up in the dictionary.

    C. How many people would like to be in charge of the world? The teacher will then let each student read the poem that they have written in front of the class.
6. Evaluation:
    The teacher will evaluate the students when they read their poem aloud.
