Title - Vivid Verb Word Bank
By - Keren Sofer
Primary Subject - Language Arts
Grade Level - 4-6

The objective of this lesson is for the class to generate a list of vivid verbs to use in their writing in order to make their writing more descriptive and original. This activity can precede any creative writing project.

Lesson Opening:
Teacher begins by explaining that certain verbs become boring because they are over used and not very descriptive. One example of this type of verb is the word "went". As a class, the word "went" is put in the "Boring Verb Bag" and a list of alternatives to "went" will be brainstormed.

Lesson:
Students volunteer as many alternatives to "went" that they can think of. Students record the verbs in their notebooks for future reference, as the teacher puts them on a poster that can be displayed in the class.

Closing:
Students are told to use this list as a reference for any creative writing that is to be done. In the future, they can go back to their writing and replace the word "went" with more descriptive verbs.

*Note: Other such "boring words" that can be used are
"said", and "like".

Students will be evaluated on their ability to use these words in their own writing, as demonstrated in writing assignments.
