Title - Using an Index
By - Phyllis George
Primary Subject - Language Arts
Secondary Subjects -
Grade Level - 4-6
Objective: Students will be able to use an index quickly and accurately.
Materials:
2 copies of an index from a nonfiction book or 2 nonfiction books with an index.
2 chalkboards or space for 2 students at a chalkboard.
A list of subjects or topics for the students to find in the index with the answers.
Activity:
Divide students into 2 teams. Give the first person on each team a copy of the index or the book. Ask them to find the page number of different topics from the list you made. First one to write the correct answer on the board gets the point for his team!! I include information in the subtopics also. Students seem to pick up how to use an index faster this way.
